Kent County (Michigan)
Kent County is a county located in the state of Michigan in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Grand Rapids.
Geography
The County is located southwest of the geographic center of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, is in the west about 45 km from Lake Michigan, one of the five great lakes, distance and has an area of 2259 square kilometers, of which 41 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Montcalm County, Ionia County, Barry County, Allegan County, Ottawa County, Muskegon County and Newaygo County.
History
Kent County was formed in 1831 from parts of Mackinac County and free territory. It was named after James Kent, a lawyer from New York.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Kent County 574 335 people in 212 890 households and 144 126 families. The population density was 259 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 83.13 percent White, 8.93 percent African American, 0.52 percent Native American, 1.86 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 3.34 percent from other races groups; 2.16 percent were descended from two or more races. 7.00 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 212 890 households out of which 35.8 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them. 52.3 percent were married couples living together, 11.6 percent were single mothers and 32.3 percent were non-families. 25.6 percent of all households and 8.0 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.20 persons.
28.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 10.5 percent of 18 to 24 years 31.2 percent between 25 and 44, 19.7 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 10.4 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 96.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.7 men statistically.
The median income for a household was $ 45,980, and the median income for a family $ 54,770. Males had a median income of $ 39,878, women $ 27,364. The per capita income was $ 21,629. 8.9 percent of the population and 6.3 percent of families are below the poverty line.
