Manistee County, Michigan
Manistee County is a county located in the state of Michigan in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Manistee.
Geography
The County is located in the northwest of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, on the west by Lake Michigan, one of the five Great Lakes, and has an area of 3317 square kilometers, of which 1909 square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Benzie County, Wexford County, Lake County and Mason County.
History
Manistee County was formed in 1840 from parts of Mackinac County. It was named after the Manistee River.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Manistee County 24 527 people in 9,860 households and 6,714 families. The population density was 17 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 94.16 percent White, 1.63 percent African American, 1.30 percent Native American, 0.32 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 1.01 percent from other races groups; 1.55 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.61 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 9,860 households out of which 27.4 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.1 percent were married couples living together, 9.1 percent were single mothers and 31.9 percent were non-families. 27.3 percent of all households and 13.2 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.86.
22.6 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 6.7 percent 18 to 24 years 26.3 percent between 25 and 44, 26.3 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 18.1 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 103.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were statistically 102 men.
The median income for a household was $ 34,208, and the median income for a family $ 41,664. Males have a median income of $ 33,211, women $ 20,851. The per capita income was $ 17,204. 6.9 percent of families and 10.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
