Kuria District

Kuria District is a district in the Nyanza Province in Kenya. The district capital is Kehancha. By 1993, the area belonged to the Migori District. In the southeast borders the district of Tanzania. Kuria District is divided into five divisions, Kehanancha, Masaba, Kegonga, Mabera and Ntimaru and a constituency. In Kuria District many members of the same ethnic group live.

Economy

The people in the Kuria District living from agriculture and fishing in Lake Victoria. There are mainly grown coffee, corn, tobacco and sugar cane. Livestock farming focuses on cattle.

Education

The Kuria District possessed 2005, 164 primary schools and 17 secondary schools.

Health service

The district has a hospital and eight health centers. One doctor for nearly 57,000 patients. There are mainly malaria, respiratory infections and diarrheal diseases treated. The HIV prevalence rate is 13%. The infant mortality rate in 2000 was 9.4%, 12.7 % of children die before their 5th birthday. In Kuria District female genital mutilation takes place as before, despite the official ban. The circumcisions take place in November and December. The Kenyan women's organization Maendeleo Ya Wanawake assumes that daily up to 200 girls are circumcised. Since June 2000, the German Society for Technical Cooperation in the Kuria District is working on site along with the District Health Management to implement the action plan for the abolition of female circumcision.
