Li (surname)

Li is the official pinyin transcription of one of the most common Chinese family name (Chinese李, Pinyin lǐ; . Kor readings or transcriptions I, Yi, Ri, Lee, Rhee; Viet Ly, Lí; . Jap. Ri, I, RI). Historically, the also frequently encountered Anglicized transliteration of the name Lee, for example, in Singapore.

There are several Chinese name, pronounced Li, but are written with different characters. Among them李is by far the most common.

Origin

The legendary founder of Daoism, Laozi (Lao -tzu ), went in the 6th century BC as the first Li in history.

History and spread of the name

In the Tang Dynasty (7th - 9th century) Li was the name of the imperial family. Since the relatives of the emperor were at all times treated preferentially, the name Li could spread strengthened.

Throughout the history of China and other nations were incorporated into the Han again and again. In trying to adapt to the new situation, many members chose Han Chinese name. Li was a popular name for members of other ethnic groups who wanted to choose a simple, but very Chinese name. Since the last name was always inherited through the father, a large number of all Han Chinese is related to each other with surname Li.
