Losap

Losap is an inhabited atoll in the archipelago of the Caroline Islands in the central Pacific Ocean. Politically, it is part of the State of Chuuk of the Federated States of Micronesia, where it is counted on the island region Mortlocks.

Geography

Losap lies 81 km to the southeast of Chuuk Atoll in the center and 110 km northwest of the Mortlock Islands (formerly prefectures Islands) in the southeast of the state. The nearest landmass is located the small neighboring island of Nama, 13 km north- west of Losap. The 10 × 6 km wide atoll has a lagoon area of ​​28 km ², the land area of ​​the 14 islands of the atoll, however together is only about 1 km ². The fringing reef is broken in several places in the West, in the southeast of the atoll, there is only a deep passage that allows the entrance to the lagoon. Losap has 882 inhabitants, spread across the three villages Pekias, Sotiw and Lucan. They speak a dialect of the Chuukesischen language, which belongs to the Micronesian languages.

The largest island is LAOL in the Northeast. Losap Iceland, just west of LAOL, is 31 meters high. The island Piis in the south reaches a height of 37 meters. The lagoon is up to 68 meters deep.

The southern and the eastern group are clearly separated by the Morappu Channel to the west of the atoll and the Morchan Channel to the east. The groups also correspond to the two communities of the atoll.

The atoll includes the municipalities Losap (0.85 km ², 445 inhabitants) in the east and Piis - Emwar (0.18 km ², 427 inhabitants) in the south ..

To Piis - Emwar include, inter alia, Pis Iceland, Alananubu and Talap Iceland ( southern group, also known as Pis Islands combined ).
