Nomwin is an inhabited atoll in the archipelago of the Caroline Islands in the central Pacific Ocean. Politically, it is part of the State of Chuuk of the Federated States of Micronesia.

Geography

Nomwin located in the north of the State of Chuuk, 82 km north of the central Chuuk Atoll. It is located 9 km southwest of the neighboring atoll Murilo, which geologically is from the same seamount and with which it forms geographically the Hall Islands and 36 km east of East Fayu. The atoll Nomwin is about 30 km long, up to 18 km wide and has a total area of 318 km ². On the fringing reef are 16 islands with a total land area of ​​1.854 km ², of which Nomwin Iceland to the south and the east Fananu are important. The up to 52 m deep lagoon has an area of ​​almost 292 km ².

Management

The atoll is part of the statistical Island Region Oksoritod and there to the sub-region Halls. It comprises the two municipalities Fananu in the East with 355 inhabitants and Nomwin in the west of the atoll with 711 inhabitants. The municipality Nomwin also includes the uninhabited atoll East Fayu. The atoll Nomwin thus has a total of 1066 inhabitants (as of 2000), who speak a dialect of the Chuukesischen language, which belongs to the Micronesian languages.
