Murilo, also Murillo, is an inhabited atoll in the archipelago of the Caroline Islands in the central Pacific Ocean. Politically, it is part of the State of Chuuk of the Federated States of Micronesia.

Geography

Murilo is located in the north of the State of Chuuk, about 100 km north-northeast of the central Chuuk Atoll. It is located 9 km northeast of the neighboring atoll Nomwin, which geologically is from the same seamount and with which it forms geographically the Hall Islands. Murilo is approximately 38 km long, up to 19 km wide and has a total area of 414 km ². On the fringing reef are 28 some very small islands with a total land area of ​​almost 1.3 square kilometers, of which Murilo in the east, the south and Ruo Numurus are the largest surface area in the West. The lagoon has an area of ​​nearly 350 km ².

Management

The atoll is part of the statistical Island Region Oksoritod and there to the sub-region Halls. It comprises the two municipalities Murillo in the East with 607 inhabitants and Ruo in the west of the atoll with 469 inhabitants. The atoll Murilo has thus a total of 1076 inhabitants (as of 2000), who speak a dialect of the Chuukesischen language, which belongs to the Micronesian languages.
