Meurcourt

Meurcourt is a commune in Haute -Saône in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Meurcourt situated at an altitude of 250 m above sea level, 12 km west-southwest of Luxeuil -les- Bains and about 18 km north- northeast of the town of Vesoul (air line). The village is located in the northern part of the department, in a basin east of the stream Ruisseau de Meurecourt, at the northern foot of Mont Vaulot.

The area of ​​11.89 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the rolling countryside of the south of the Lanterne. The central part of the area is occupied by a plateau, which is constructed from limestone of the Middle Triassic. It is drained to the Lanterne by the Ruisseau de Meurecourt to the northwest. Agricultural land use predominates here. To the north of the municipality floor extends into the extensive grove of Bois lingerie ( to 277 m) and to the headwaters of the Ruisseau des Chaufours.

South of the village is derived through an up to 100 m high ground level to the heights of Mont Vaulot. With 409 m find the highest mountains of Meurcourt is achieved. History

On the basis of traces of two Roman roads and the remains of a settlement site could be demonstrated that the area was inhabited very early. Is first mentioned Meurcourt in 1159 under the name Muri Cortis. In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in the territory of the Bailliage d' amont. It was by the Knights Templar of La Villedieu -en- Fontenette dependent. Together with the Franche -Comté Meurcourt came with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France. At the beginning of the 20th century, the city was connected by a tram to the network of public transport. The operation on the line in 1934 was discontinued and replaced by a bus service. Today Meurcourt is a member of the 17 localities comprehensive community association Communauté de communes du Pays de Saulx.

Attractions

The village church of Meurcourt was ordained in 1777. A stone wayside cross on the village square is dated to the year 1630. Next to the church there is a large covered Lavoir from 1886 with eleven arcades arch. It once served as a laundry and watering cattle. The village is characterized by various houses from the 17th to the 19th century, showing the traditional style of the Haute -Saône. The Mairie -École ( local government and school) was built in 1848. Also worth seeing is the village fountain with two columns.

Population

With 310 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Meurcourt one of the small towns in the Haute- Saône. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1881 773 persons were still counted ), a slight population growth was recorded since the mid-1970s again.

Economy and infrastructure

Meurcourt was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) and forestry embossed village. Today, there are some establishments of local small businesses. In recent decades the village has been transformed into a residential community. The village is situated away from the larger passage axes on a secondary road that leads from Conflans -sur- Lanterne after Saulx. Further road links exist with Luxeuil -les- Bains and La Villedieu -en- Fontenette.
