Velorcey

Velorcey is a commune in Haute -Saône in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Velorcey situated at an altitude of 258 m above sea level, 11 km west-southwest of Luxeuil -les- Bains and about 19 km north- northeast of the town of Vesoul (air line). The village is located in the northern part of the department, in a depression at the northern foot of the heights of Mont Vaulot.

The area of ​​6.18 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the rolling countryside of the south of the Lanterne. The central part of the area occupied by the basin of the Ruisseau de la Prairie and its headwaters. It ensures the drainage north to the Lanterne. The valley is on average 250 m and has a maximum width of one kilometer. Agricultural land use predominates here.

To the south the terrain, which is composed mainly of limestone of the Middle Triassic rises gradually to the heights of the Bois de Villers. The eastern boundary is the crest of the Bois Dard, on the 310 m, the highest elevation of Velorcey is achieved. North of the valley of the Ruisseau de la Prairie, the municipality's area extends into the vast forest area of the Bois de Mont Berti ( to 288 m). Here occurs sandstone from the Lower Triassic apparent.

Neighboring communities of Velorcey are Conflans -sur- Lanterne and Briaucourt in the north, Abelcourt in the east, Villers- lès- Luxeuil in the south and Meurcourt in the West.

History

In the Middle Ages Velorcey belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in the territory of the Bailliage d' amont. It was by the Knights Templar of La Villedieu -en- Fontenette dependent. In 1364 the village was destroyed by the Grandes dance companies. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the place with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France. At the beginning of the 20th century Velorcey was connected by a tram to the network of public transport. The operation on the line in 1934 was discontinued and replaced by a bus service.

Attractions

The church of Saint -Laurent was rebuilt in the 19th century in the Gothic Revival style. It has a statue of the Madonna ( 17th century ) made of wood and other statues from the 18th century. A Calvaire, which is dated to the year 1767. Also worth seeing are the fountain with a gazebo and a former manor house with tower from the 16th century.

Population

With 218 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Velorcey one of the small towns in the Haute- Saône. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1881 279 persons were still counted ), a population growth was recorded since the early 1980s again.

Economy and infrastructure

Velorcey was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) and forestry embossed village. Today, there are some establishments of local small businesses. In recent decades the village has been transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who engage in the larger towns in the vicinity of their work.

The village is situated away from the larger passage axes on a secondary road that leads from Luxeuil -les- Bains to La Villedieu -en- Fontenette. Another road connection with Conflans -sur- Lanterne.
