Nigerien constitutional referendum, 1989

The constitutional referendum in Niger in 1989 was held on 24 September 1989. The electorate voted Niger majority for adoption of the Constitution of the Second Republic.

Background

The First Republic ended by the 1974 military coup. As a preliminary step to creating a new constitution was since the referendum of 1987, a National Charter in force. Now by the military regime, the Constitution of the Second Republic was submitted to a referendum. She saw a presidential system of government with a single party, the National Movement of the Development Society, before. In an earlier draft of the Constitution, the adoption of a multi-party system still had been planned. The constitution should allow the Nigerien armed forces, it is also to keep a limited influence on the political process.

Result

For the 3,477,874 registered voters, the turnout was 95.1 %. Of the votes counted as valid ballots 3.29945 million.

Follow
