Nigerien constitutional referendum, 1992

The constitutional referendum in Niger in 1992 was held on 26 December 1992. The electorate voted Niger majority for adoption of the Constitution of the Third Republic.

Background

The Constitution of the Third Republic was worked from 1991 of a National Conference, the members of various political and civil society organizations belonged. You should replace the presidential under Ali Saibou by a semipräsidentielles system of government and the party system of the National Movement of the Development Society through a multi-party system. In addition, they should turn off the last remaining influence of the Nigerien armed forces on the political landscape.

Result

From 3,900,881 2.20722 million registered voters went to the polls. This corresponds to a voter turnout of 56.6 %. Of the ballots cast were 2.16692 million as valid and 40,300 counted as invalid.

The election was considered free. However, it was observed that in some cases men charges on their wives votes.

Follow

The Constitution of the Third Republic, came into force on 22 January 1993. For shortly afterwards held parliamentary and presidential elections, the former Unity Party National Movement of the Development Society and its presidential candidate Mamadou Tandja emerged as the election losers.
