Nigerien parliamentary election, 1996

The parliamentary elections in Niger in 1996 were held on 23 November 1996. Were elected the 83 members of the National Assembly of Niger.

Background

The Third Republic (1993-1996) ended ( CDS Rahama ) was overthrown by a military coup led by Ibrahim Baré Maïnassara, in which President Mahamane Ousmane. The Constitution of the Fourth Republic was adopted in the constitutional referendum on 12 May 1996. The coup leader Ibrahim Baré Maïnassara could be elected president vote in the disputed presidential election on 7 and 8 July 1996. Before the general election, eight parties joined together to Front for the Restoration and Defence of Democracy, which demanded, among other things, the restoration of the independent State Election Commission in its original form. The alliance consisted of the members elected at the last general election on 12 January 1995 parties MNSD - Nassara, CDS Rahama, PNDS - Tarayya, PPN - RDA, the PSDN Alhéri and PUND Salama. Since the demands of the Front for the Restoration and Defence of Democracy were not met, the Allies decided to boycott the election.

Results

From 3,939,101 registered voters went to the polls officially 1535963. This corresponds to a voter turnout of 39%. 36 151 ballots were counted as blank votes or zero votes. The election, which was monitored by international observers, was largely peaceful. The opposition questioned the official figures on voter turnout. The Inter-Parliamentary Union reported of serious inconsistencies in the official information available election results.

In December 1996 Moutari Moussa ( UNIRD ) was elected President of the National Assembly. President Baré Maïnassara appointed Amadou Cissé prime minister.
