Nigerien parliamentary election, 1995

The parliamentary elections in Niger in 1995 took place on 12 January 1995. Were elected the 83 members of the National Assembly of Niger.

Background

The party PNDS - Tarayya left in September 1994, the government coalition alliance of the forces of change, which President Mahamane Ousmane ( CDS Rahama ) no longer had an absolute majority to support him parties in the National Assembly. Ousmane appointed on 6 October 1994 Souley Abdoulaye ( CDS Rahama ) prime minister of an interim government that resigned after a no-confidence vote in parliament on 16 October 1994. The president then dissolved on 17 October 1994, the National Assembly and wrote new elections. This had originally intended to take place on 31 December 1994 and have been moved twice. The election campaign took place in the country against the backdrop of a severe economic and social crisis. The elections themselves were monitored by international and national observers.

Results

From 4,376,031 1,530,198 registered voters went to the polls. This corresponds to a voter turnout of 34.9 %. Of the ballots cast were 1,446,121 valid and 84 077 counted as invalid.

The elections resulted in no significant change in the majority of circumstances. The alliance of the forces of change criticized alleged irregularities in some constituencies, but the Supreme Court declared the elections valid. On 8 February 1995, it was elected President of the National Assembly Mahamadou Issoufou of the PNDS - Tarayya. On February 25, 1995, President Mahamane Ousmane was forced by Hama Amadou MNSD - Nassara, who also was not part of the alliance of the forces of change, appoint as prime minister. In the system of cohabitation, the president refused to cooperate with the government and the Parliament. Just before he constitutionally again, the National Assembly would dissolve and new elections could begin, Ousmane was overthrown on 27 January 1996, by a military coup led by Ibrahim Baré Maïnassara.
