Nightlife (Pet Shop Boys album)

Nightlife is the seventh studio album by the Pet Shop Boys. It was published in October 1999 with Parlophone. It reached number 2 in Germany and in the United Kingdom # 7 on the charts.

History

After the Pet Shop Boys have released their previous album Bilingual, they worked with the author Jonathan Harvey together on the musical Closer to Heaven, which finally in May 2001, at London's Arts Theatre premiere. Pieces from this period have been brought out as a concept album called Night Life. Also, the musical had in parts this working title.

In Denial With a duet with Kylie Minogue was included in a phase in which Minogue was less successful. The Pet Shop Boys had already written for the album Kylie Minogue 1994 a piece for them. In 2000, Minogue signed with Parlophone.

Reception

Wrote Stephen Thomas Erlewine of Allmusic, the album was " less than the sum of its parts": "Repeated listens reveal the songs' charms, yet Nightlife coasts on its craft a bit too much, Which makes it feel like one of Their second-tier albums. "
