Piaggio P.111

The Piaggio P.111 was a high-altitude research aircraft of the Italian manufacturer Piaggio Aero Industries.

History and construction

The development of the P.111 began in 1938, when the Aeronautica Militare wrote out a competition for the development of a twin-engine, three-seat height fast bomber with a pressurized cabin, won the Piaggio. Especially for the Piaggio P.111 produced a new two-row 18- cylinder radial engine with 745 kW ( 999 hp), the Piaggio P.XII RC100/2v, which was equipped with a two-stage turbocharger. The machine was built entirely out of metal and had a conventional tail, low set wings where the engines were mounted. The main landing gear of the spur -wheel drive was drafted into the engine nacelles. While the prototype was under construction, approved the Aeronautica Militare the machine as a high-altitude research aircraft instead of using as a bomber.

The P.111 first flew on 9 April 1941. 110 test flights took place mainly in the development of a pressure cabin for the Piaggio P.108 instead. In early 1943, the aircraft was scrapped.
