Piaggio P.8

The Piaggio P.8 was a reconnaissance aircraft Piaggio Aero Industries of the Italian manufacturer.

History and construction

The Piaggio P.8 was developed on the basis of a request, the Regia Marina to a small reconnaissance flying boat that could be carried by the great Italian submarine Ettore Fieramosca. The aircraft had to be constructed so that it was easy to fit or demountable, so it could be quickly stowed in a watertight cylindrical hangar on board the submarine to have emerged the risk for during this time lying on the surface of submarine minimized. The P.8 was a strutted single-seat high-wing monoplane with two floats, which was powered by a Blackburn Cirrus II piston engine with 56 kW. The first flight took place in 1928.

The P.8 was only one of several small seaplanes that have been tested for use on board the Ettore Fieramosca. None of the aircraft was ever actually used on board the submarine and the hangar in 1931 from the U- boat.
