Piaggio P.2

The Piaggio P.2 was the prototype of the Italian manufacturer Piaggio Aero Industries a fighter aircraft.

History and construction

In 1923 the Pegna - Bonmartini workshops began the construction of a prototype aerodynamically formed by aircraft which was a very advanced design for the time. The P.2 was a single-seat cantilever low-wing monoplane, whose hull was manufactured in shell construction made of wood and covered with plywood and covered with fabric. The aircraft was armed with two synchronized machine guns, which fired through the propeller arc. Actually, the aircraft was built around the 224 kW payable water-cooled V8 engine Hispano -Suiza HS 42. Even in 1923 Piaggio bought the company; The prototype was completed in the same year. Two prototypes were built, which had to face the competition for a new fighter plane of the Regia Aeronautica. The P.2 was probably ahead of its time, as the Italian Air Ministry distrusted a monoplane; also corresponded to the achievements not those predicted by Giovanni Pegna why there was no mass production. However, the Italian Air Force acquired a prototype for extensive testing.
