Pidhaitsi

Pidhajzi (Ukrainian Підгайці; Russian Подгайцы / Podgajzy, Polish Podhajce ) is situated on the river Koropetz a city in western Ukraine in the Ternopil Oblast.

History

Pidhajzi were granted in 1539 by royal decree, the city rights under the Magdeburg Law.

Pidhajzi was the site of two major battles between Poland - Lithuania and the Crimean Tatars in league with some of the Zaporozhian Cossacks.

Pidhajzi belonged since the First Partition of Poland in 1772 to the " Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria ", which was part of the Habsburg Austrian Empire ( Empire of Austria in 1804 ). From 1867 it was part of Austria - Hungary. After the collapse of the Habsburg monarchy during the First World War Pidhajzi came under Polish control and was from 1921-1939 a part of the Tarnopol Voivodeship. The city came in 1939 under the Hitler -Stalin Pact in the Soviet- Russian sphere of influence and was annexed by the Soviet invasion of Poland in September by the Soviet Union and incorporated into the Ukrainian SSR. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 Pidhajzi belongs to the Republic of Ukraine.
