Pokrov, Vladimir Oblast

Pokrovsky (Russian Покров ) is a town in Vladimir Oblast (Russia) with 17,756 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city lies about 80 km west of Oblasthauptstadt Vladimir left the Klyazma, a left tributary of the opening into the Volga Oka.

Pokrovsky belongs to Rajon Petuschki.

History

The town originated in the 17th century village at Anthony's and Intercession Intercession Monastery ( Антониева Покровская пустынь / Antonijewa Pokrowskaja pustyn ), which existed from the 15th to the 18th century. The name derives from the name of the monastery: Pokrovsky is the Russian (or Church Slavonic ) Short for Pokrovsky Preswjatoi Bogorodozy, the holiday of the Intercession of the Holy Mother of God, one of the " Great Festivals " of the Russian Orthodox Church on October 1, according to Julian Calendar.

1778 a city charter was granted.

Economy and infrastructure

Most important companies in the city is a confectionery factory of American Kraft Foods, which was from 1996 to 2001 in the possession of the German food company Stollwerck and reconstructed during this period and was substantially rebuilt. There are also companies in the pharmaceutical and textile industries as well as the building materials industry.

The city is located ( four kilometers away from the city railway station, 110 km of track ) at the 1862 opened railway line Moscow - Nizhny Novgorod, on the upside today, much of the features of the Trans-Siberian railway on its western part from Moscow. By Pokrovsky also the M7 highway Moscow - Nizhny Novgorod -Kazan - Ufa leads (part of European route 22).
