Career

Preston attended the public school in Statesboro. He then graduated in 1930 at the Law Department of the University of Georgia in Athens. He was admitted as a lawyer in the same year and opened a practice in Statesboro. Between 1935 and 1938 he was a member of the House of Representatives of Georgia. When the United States entered the Second World War, he enlisted in September 1942 as a private soldier in the U.S. Army. He was promoted to the rank of Captain and released on 13 October 1945.

After the war he was elected in 1946 a judge of the Municipal Court of Statesboro, but he took the post not because he had been elected to Congress. During his tenure, he was involved in the constitution of the Southern Manifesto, which spoke out against racial integration in public institutions. Preston died on February 8, 1961 in Savannah. He was buried in the Eastside Cemetery in Statesboro.
