Ribera, Agrigento

Ribera is a city in the province of Agrigento in the Italian region Sicily.

Location and data

Ribera is situated 51 kilometers northwest of Agrigento. Here live 19 256 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012), who mainly work in agriculture, viticulture and in the food industry.

The neighboring municipalities are Bivona, Calamonaci, Caltabellotta, Cattolica Eraclea, Cianciana and Sciacca.

History

Here stood the city Allava in antiquity. Old Byzantine necropolis testify to this. 1627 the present town of Luigi Guglielmo Moncada, Prince of Paternò was founded. The city was given the name of his wife, the Maria de Ribera Afan.

Structures

The parish church in Piazza Duomo dates from the 18th century. The town hall from the 19th century stands in Piazza Duomo. The birthplace of the politician Francesco Crispi can be visited.
