Riols

Riols is a commune in the department of Hérault in the Languedoc- Roussillon region.

Geography

Riols lies in the valley of the river Jaur, four kilometers away from Saint -Pons -de- Thomières and one of the largest communities in France. The municipality is part of the Regional Natural Park of Haut Languedoc.

The municipality summarizes 17 small villages, including next Riols the places Langlade, Bordevieille, Lignon, Ardouane, board, Mézouilhac, Cassillac, Euzèdes, Marso, Condades and Roulio. Most smaller places are now only very sparse and partly inhabited only during the summer months. Due to the precipitous situation and the labor market situation, most residents have moved to the larger cities and use their homes even as a weekend and holiday home.

Riols has 759 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011). With an area of 56.02 km ² size, population density is 12 inhabitants per km ².

History

In the caves of the region could find traces of civilization dating from 3600 BC. Between the 16th and 19th centuries, a strong textile industry, but it's now come to a complete standstill developed. Riols led resistance to the coup d'état of Napoleon III. of 2 December 1851. Victor Hugo mentioned this in 1874 in his historical novel " Quatre- vingt- treize ", which is about the political terror of terrors 1793.
