Sestriere

Sestriere ( Piedmontese ël Sestrier, French Sestrières, Occitan Sestrieras or la Sestriera ) is a municipality with 853 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012) in the Italian region of Piedmont. Located close to the French border town in the province of Turin is a ski resort.

Location and districts

The village lies on an eponymous 2035 meter high mountain pass between the Val Chisone and the Susa Valley. In the north- west it is dominated by the 2701 meter high Mount Fraiteve, in the southeast of Mount Sises ( 2658 m) and from the Punta Rognosa ( 3280 m). To Sestriere Sestriere Colle include the districts on the pass, Sestriere Borgata in Val Chisone Champlas du Col and Champlas Janvier in the Susa Valley.

Development

Fiat founder Giovanni Agnelli senior was built by the early 1930s, two hotels and two cable cars, including an aerial tramway created by Adolf Bleichert & Co.. Later followed another hotel, a ski jump and the first chair and Europe's highest 18- hole golf course. During the Second World War, the facilities were damaged, then rebuilt in the 1950s again.

Together with the neighboring communities of Claviere, Sauze d' Oulx, Cesana Torinese and Pragelato Sestriere has joined the Via Lattea ski area. The famous slopes, on which there are also competitions, are Banchetta, Fraiteve and Sises. Overall Sestriere has 146 slopes and 92 lifts / cable cars. The total length of ski runs is 400 km, of which 120 are covered with artificial snow.

Sports

Winter sports

The place is a regular venue for the Alpine Ski World Cup races; here also the Alpine World Ski Championships 1997 took place. At the Olympic Winter Games 2006 in Turin, the alpine skiing events were held in Sestriere. Sestriere is also home to one of the three Olympic Villages this Winter Games. It covers 75,000 square meters and is situated in the village center.

Tour de France

Sestriere was in the past years always part of the Tour de France. In addition to four stage arrivals and three crossings of the pass also launched three stages in the place.

From the west, the ascent begins in Cesana Torinese, overcoming 11.5 kilometers 679 height meters, which corresponds to an average slope of six percent. Beginning of the slope to the east is Perosa Argentina. From there, it is 37.9 km long and an average of 3.8 percent steep, with 1425 meters of altitude to be overcome.

Giro d' Italia

In 2011, the 20th stage of the Giro d' Italia resulted from Verbania to Sestriere. Winners of this stage was Vasil Kiryjenka.

2013 onwards, the 14th stage of the Giro Sestriere to Bardonecchia ( Jafferau ) lead. Due to snowfall in Sestriere the place had to be avoided. The stage was won by 12 km extended Mauro Santambrogio.

Rallying

From 1950 to 1960 Sestriere was the starting point of about 1800 km long Sestriere Rally on Bologna and Rome. In 1960, the event was canceled due to an official statement.
