Severoonezhsk

Sewerooneschsk (Russian Североонежск ) is an urban-type settlement in North West Russia. It belongs to the Arkhangelsk Oblast and has 5289 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

Sewerooneschsk is located on the left bank of the river Onega, 220 km south of Arkhangelsk Oblasthauptstadt. It is located in Plesetsk Raion and is located about 24 km from the center Plesetsk away.

History

In the 1960s, large bauxite deposits were discovered and completed the first mine in 1968 in the present territory of Sewerooneschsk. For the development of resources began with the construction of a railway bridge over the Onega, which was completed in 1971. At the newly established railway station Iksa in Sewerooneschsk created in 1973 as a work settlement. Originally the settlement Sewerorossijsk be called and it was expected by the settlement of bauxite manufacturing industry with a fast growth of the town up to 100,000 inhabitants. However, these plans have not been realized, among other things, due to the low level of production.

In 1985 Sewerooneschsk received the status of an urban settlement.

Economy and infrastructure

The city's economy still relies largely on the mining industry, especially the extraction of bauxite and basalt ores. Another important industry is forestry.

In Sewerooneschsk the railway station Iksa the Saoneschskaja Railway is ( Заонежская железная дорога ), which extends to 111 km from Puksa after Jangory. In the settlement itself, the station is north and the main railway depot of the route.
