Shimotsuke Province

The Shimotsuke Province (Japanese下野 国, Shimotsuke no kuni ) or short Yashu (野 州) was up to the 9th century, an old province of Japan in the region Tosando, today is its territory, Tochigi Prefecture.

The province was created from the splitting of the province Keno / Kenu in the provinces Shimo-tsu-Keno/Kenu (下 毛 野 国, dt "provincial Under - keno " ) and Kami-tsu-Keno/Kenu (上 毛 野 国, dt " Province upper Keno "). 713 was an imperial edict the spelling of the provinces reduced to two kanji, here the first and third characters. The debate Shimotsuke however borrowed from the first and second characters.

The old capital ( Kokufu ) was near the modern city of Tochigi, in feudal times, however, the center of the province stood at Utsunomiya. Different parts of Shimotsuke were kept in the Sengoku period of a multitude of small daimyo.
