Teso District, Kenya

Teso District is a district in the Kenyan province of Western. The capital is Malaba. To the west the district of Uganda.

Structure

Teso District is divided into four divisions, which are divided into 30 locations and 82 sub- locations.

Economy

In 2002, 56 percent of the population lived in Teso District below the poverty line and earned less than one U.S. dollar a day. 65 percent of people live from agriculture, there are mainly maize, beans, millet, tobacco, coffee, cotton and sugar cane grown. In the district of industry is lacking.

Health service

In Teso District, there are 13 state of health care facilities. Mainly malaria, respiratory infections and diseases of the digestive system to be treated. The doctor-patient ratio is 1:45.372. The infant mortality rate is 7.5 percent, the fifth anniversary of experienced, not every eleventh child. Approximately one in four residents in Teso District is HIV-positive or have AIDS, the district has one of the highest HIV prevalence rates in Kenya. The reasons for this are given with the ever-increasing number of orphans and the associated increase in child prostitution and child labor at the same time reducing agricultural yields.
