Veľká Ida

Velka Ida (Hungarian Nagyida ) is a municipality in eastern Slovakia with 3287 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011).

Location

It lies in the valley near the river Košická kotlina Ida, on the border to the city of Košice (district Šaca, the center is 15 km away). The town has a station on the railway line Zvolen, Košice.

The environment is adversely affected by the adjacent steel mill, U.S. Steel Kosice.

To the municipality next to the main village belongs also the place Gomboš (Hungarian Gombospuszta ).

History

The village was first mentioned in 1251. The village had in the Middle Ages a castle ( so called gypsy castle ), built from 1411 to 1414 as a fortress against the Hussites. In 1557 the castle was destroyed.

Until 1919, the municipality in the county Abaúj- Torna the Kingdom of Hungary was, thereafter, she came to the newly formed Czechoslovakia. Because of the First Vienna Award 1938-1945 it belonged again to Hungary and since 1993 has been part of the present-day Slovakia.
