Virginia Wings

The Virginia Wings were an American ice hockey franchise in the American Hockey League from Norfolk, Virginia.

History

The franchise was founded in 1971 as Tidewater Wings. Prior to the 1972/73 season, the Wings have been renamed a farm team of the Detroit Red Wings and Wings in Virginia. After the Tidewater Wings had still missed the playoffs for the Calder Cup in their first season, reached the Virginia Wings in the 1972/73 season the second playoff round, where they lost to Cincinnati Swords with 2:4 victories. After another year without playoff participation, the Wings were in season 1974/75 for the first and only time division champion, retired, however, already in the first playoff round with 1:4 victories against the New Haven Nighthawks of. Following this season, the Virginia Wings were inactive. After four years, the Detroit Red Wings, the franchise moved to Glens Falls, New York, where it was active as Adirondack Red Wings AHL 1979-1999.

The gap that emerged in Norfolk, was in the aftermath of the Hampton Gulls ( 1977-78 ) and the Norfolk Admirals (since 2000) of the American Hockey League, the Hampton Gulls ( 1974-1977 ) and the Tidewater Sharks (1975 - 1977) from the Southern Hockey League, as well as the Hampton Road Gulls ( 1982-1983 ) from the Atlantic Coast Hockey League and the Hampton Roads Admirals ( 1989-2000 ) from the East Coast Hockey League filled.
