Siku Quanshu

The Siku Quanshu ( The Complete Library of the Four Treasures ,四库 全书, Siku quanshu ), the largest collection of books in Chinese History is completed after about nine years. The editorial board consisted of 361 scientists, with Ji Yun and Lu Xixiong as chief editors. Were collected and recognized over 10,000 manuscripts from the imperial collection and other libraries. About 3000 journals were destroyed because they were considered Manchu hostile. Ultimately 3461 books have been selected for inclusion into the Siku Quanshu. They are bound in 36 381 volumes with more than 79,000 chapters. At about 2.3 million pages, about 800 million Chinese characters find. Four copies for the emperor kept in specially constructed libraries in the Forbidden City, the Old Summer Palace, Shenyang, and Wenjin Chamber, Chengde. Three more copies to the public will be deposited in Siku quanshu libraries in Hangzhou, Zhenjiang and Yangzhou. All seven libraries will also receive a copy of the Imperial Encyclopedia Gujin Tushu Jicheng from 1725.

  • March 23: In France, the first edition of the written by Pierre -Ambroise - Francois Choderlos de Laclos novel Les Liaisons dangereuses letter ( Dangerous Liaisons ) appears. After four weeks, the printed 2,000 copies are sold out.
  • De Sade writes in prison the essay dialogue between a priest and a dying man. The text is not published until 1926.
