The 28th Giro d' Italia was held to 9 June 1940 by 17 May. He was already standing in the shadow of World War II.
The cycling consisted of 20 stages with a total length of 3,574 kilometers. 47 of 91 starters reached the finish. Fausto Coppi was supported by his stage victory on the 11th stage from last year's winner and teammate Gino Bartali and won the Giro victory in front of Enrico Mollo. The mountain competition was won by Gino Bartali. The team competition was won by the team Gloria.
