Background

The Grand Prix of the Netherlands took place again after two years, there were no former winners of the race. The Grand Prix of the Netherlands won in 1955 Juan Manuel Fangio, who, however, still paused and had only participated in a round of the Formula 1 season 1958.

The British team Vanwall, Cooper, BRM and Lotus competed with each unchanged driver pairings. Also, the Rob Walker Racing Team, which won the first two races of the season started, again with a cart for Maurice Trintignant. Ferrari reduced the number of cars used again at three and went with Mike Hawthorn, Luigi Musso and Peter Collins, which paused again Wolfgang Graf Berghe von Trips. With Giorgio Scarlatti, Jo Bonnier, Masten Gregory and Horace Gould were four drivers with private Maserati 250F to race, in which Gregory took over the car from Gould after training.

Carel Godin de Beaufort launched for the first time in Formula 1 in a private Porsche 718 after 1958 as part of the Formula 2 race for Porsche took part in the Grand Prix of Germany. Thus came together with the Cooper T45 two different cars with rear engine to the race.

In the drivers' standings Musso led by four points at Stirling Moss and Trintignant, each won a race. The constructors' championship led to Cooper, with four points ahead of Ferrari.

Training

The training for the Grand Prix of the Netherlands in 1958 was dominated by Vanwall, the eligible again all three cars on the first three grid positions. Stuart Lewis -Evans had a little less than a second ahead of Stirling Moss, who was just ahead of Tony Brooks. For Lewis -Evans was the second and final pole position of his career, he died at the end of the season due to the effects of severe burn injuries he sustained in an accident at the Grand Prix of Morocco 1958.

Behind the Vanwall Jean Behra qualified in BRM also for the front row, he missed just three tenths of a second to the time of Brooks. In fifth place, Jack Brabham placed in Cooper, also just behind Behra in time standings, so a three-way battle between Vanwall, Cooper and BRM was to be expected for the race.

Hawthorn qualified to be the best Ferrari driver in sixth, his teammates started from position ten and twelve. Harry Schell in the second B.R.M. reached number seven in front of the winner of the previous race, Trintignant. Roy Salvadori in the second Cooper completed the top ten.

Lotus, who participated only on her second race went from eleventh place and 13 in the race, Cliff Allison was again faster than Graham Hill. Gregory took over the training of the car and was the best-placed driver Gould, those thus qualified with private car at position 14, while the Porsche of Beaufort was not competitive and Beaufort only on the last spot on the grid.

Race

Already at the start Moss took over the lead of the race, Lewis -Evans positioned himself behind Moss in second place. Schell, who started from seventh place, most positions at the start did well and went to number three before. Brooks car was hit in the rear by another car, so he was in for repair to come to the box forced a few laps later, on lap 13 retired Brooks but then with a broken half shaft out. Fourth place inherited thus Salvadori Cooper. In round 16 was followed by the second failure of the race, Gregory put his Maserati with a defective fuel pump.

In the twelfth lap Schell Lewis -Evans overtook and brought the BRM Thus, to second place, but Moss had increased his lead to the point that he was no longer einholbar to end of the race. Behind Lewis -Evans overtook Schell's teammate Behra only Hawthorn in a Ferrari and then Savadori. The Ferrari was not competitive compared to the UK competition at the Grand Prix of the Netherlands in 1958, Hawthorn held only to fifth position, while his teammate Collins retired on lap 32 with gearbox failure. On lap 41 Hill retire from his second race, because his car overheated, Lewis -Evans was followed by four laps later with engine failure, which Behra took the third place. Thus Vanwall continued the high failure rate of his car, Moss was spared in this race of physical defects. Another failure took place in round 50, Scarlatti put his Maserati also from a broken half- shaft.

Moss won his second race of the season, for Vanwall it was the first victory in the Formula 1 season as Moss won the first race at Cooper. B.R.M. took place two of Schell and third place of a Behra the hitherto best race result of its history, for both drivers however, it was the most recent podium finish their Formula 1 careers. Fourth place Salvadori came to the finish, the more points scored for Cooper, the only non - British cars in the points was Hawthorn in Ferrari in fifth. The point for the fastest lap was Moss.

As the leader in the drivers 'standings, Musso, in the race only seventh behind Allison in Lotus was thus scored no points, Moss took the lead in the drivers' standings with five points. Schell was after the race in fourth position with the same number of points as the third-placed Trintignant. In the constructors' championship Cooper built the lead to Ferrari by one point to five points out, Vanwall brought the first points of the season and was tied with BRM in third place.
