1960–61 European Cup Winners' Cup

The European Cup Winners 'Cup 1960/61, was the first playout of competition for European Football Cup Winners' Cup. This had unofficial character, because it was not organized by UEFA, but by a committee consisting of officials of the participating clubs. The finals took place between Fiorentina and Rangers on 17 and 27 May 1961. Florence won by 2-0 in Glasgow and a 2-1 home win 4-1 on aggregate the first edition. Scorer with six goals Kurt Hamrin, who stood at the victorious Italians under contract.

Only 10 club teams participated, including six reigning Cup holders, 2 Cup finalists and two runners-up. The Czechoslovak representative Spartak ZJS Brno at that time was only in the final of the national cup competition, Italy sent with Fiorentina the Cup finalists since Juventus was qualified as an Italian double winners already for the European Cup of Champions 1960/61. In Hungary, there was at this time no national cup competition, participants Ferencvaros Budapest was runner-up. The Football Association of the GDR sent instead of the cup winners Dynamo Berlin the vice-champion of the 1959 season Vorwärts Berlin because it was considered more appropriate representative of the GDR.

From West Germany were DFB-Pokal winners Borussia Mönchengladbach, from Austria ÖFB Cup winners FK Austria Wien and from Switzerland champions FC Luzern at the start.

Mode

The participants played in the Cup mode with pure round-trip games ( including finals) the winner. In Torgleichstand Overtime in the second leg, it would come to a playoff on neutral ground, since a penalty shootout was not provided. The away goals rule was also not yet.

First round

The first legs took place on 28 September 1960 at the 1st and 11th August, the return games.

Quarterfinals

The first legs were held until November 23, the return matches from October 26 to December 28, 1960 by 28th September.

Semifinal

The first legs took place on 22./29. March, the return matches on 12./19. April 1961 instead.
