Background

Because of the large number of accidents that had occurred in the last round of the Grand Prix of Great Britain due to sudden onset of rain, the repair costs of some teams was very large in the two weeks before the Germany -GP. For this reason, the team Surtees had to do without the participation and then allowed his regular driver John Watson to step in at Lotus as a substitute for Jacky Ickx.
