Background

About one month after the Italian Grand Prix, where the World Cup had already been decided in favor of Niki Lauda and Ferrari, the season finale was held at Watkins Glen.

The teams BRM and Surtees Maki waived completely for participation, while Hill and Ensign competed each with only one car. March also reduced its exposure by only two instead of the last usually three works cars were reported. The pilot of the third car, Lella Lombardi, then moved to Williams.

Wilson Fittipaldi and Brian Henton returned to the driver's field, the latter again Jim Crawford replaced in the second factory Lotus.
