Background

With 17 points behind the championship leader Niki Lauda James Hunt went to the three flyaway races that made up the end of the season. The Team McLaren also had more chances of winning the Constructors' World Championship. Because of this situation it was decided to initially suspend the further development of the problematic M26 and end the season with the mature M23.

The use of Carlos Reutemann Ferrari at the Grand Prix of Italy was initially not a sequel. The commitment of the team was again reduced to the usual two factory cars for Niki Lauda and Clay Regazzoni. In the ninth round Hunt took the lead and gave them for the rest of the race no longer from. The hitherto Leading Peterson lost during the following rounds numerous positions and eventually finished the race in ninth.

Due to handling problems had to Lauda in the 59th round Jochen Mass, Clay Regazzoni and Carlos Pace can happen and thus fell back to eighth place.

By winning James Hunt reduced his deficit in the world championship standings to eight points, as his rival Niki Lauda remained without points.
