Background

During the four-week break between the Grand Prix of Great Britain and the ninth world championship race test runs took place at Hockenheim. In the course of Alfa Romeo driver Patrick Depailler was killed. He lost in the then busy even without harassment Ostkurve for unknown reasons, the control of his car and crashed at high speed into the unprotected range limit. The material for the construction of stacks of tires and catch fences had been delivered at the time and was packed behind a crash barrier. The installation of these safety devices that could reduce the force of the impact was, however, later held only for ten days Germany GP was provided and was thus held after the accident.

Alfa Romeo occupied the free cockpit initially not new and therefore approached with only one car. The ATS Racing team, however, has expanded its commitment briefly on two cars and thus gave Harald Ertl, the possibility of a Formula 1 comeback.

Training

Due to a wet track, none of the pilots achieved a lap time under two minutes during the first qualifying session on Friday. On Saturday this was achieved at significantly lower track conditions all drivers.

Alan Jones completed the fastest round of training and thus qualified for the pole position in front of the resurgent Renault of Jean -Pierre Jabouille and René Arnoux. Carlos Reutemann followed in the second Williams before Jacques Laffite and Nelson Piquet.

While the team Renault seemed to have returned to his usual form, the Ferrari driver Gilles Villeneuve and Jody Scheckter disappointed again with positions 16 and 21

Race

Although Jones was the best start succeeded Jabouille could take the lead because of its turbo engine on the first of the long Hockenheimer forest line. Arnoux was third, followed by the two Ligier - pilot Didier Pironi and Jacques Laffite and Fittipaldi driver Keke Rosberg. This was after a pit stop in the third round due to a defective rear wing to the end of the field and in the eighth round due to a wheel bearing damage from. On lap 19 Pironi had to abandon the race in the pits. The reason was a broken drive shaft.

Within moments fell on lap 26 and 27 both Renault due to engine damage from the race. This got Jones in the lead before Laffite and Reutemann. With already a considerable residue followed at this time Piquet before Elio de Angelis and John Watson.

Through a pit stop tire change Jones fell in the 41th round back to third place. Although he still was the fastest driver in the field, he could not prevent the victory of Laffite before Reutemann. Piquet was fourth. Bruno Giacomelli and Gilles Villeneuve occupied as profiteers to the inherent failures of Watson and de Angelis positions five and six.
