The Grand Prix of Austria in 1983 was held on 14 August at the ring Austria near Zeltweg and was the eleventh round of the Formula 1 season 1983.

Background

Although only there was a week between the Grand Prix of Germany and the eleventh World Championship race in Austria, presented a first copy of the new Tyrrell 012 finished. Michele Alboreto drove the car.

Training

The training was dominated again by the two Ferrari drivers, with René Arnoux again his team-mate Patrick Tambay had to admit defeat. Nigel Mansell reached the third place next to Brabham driver Nelson Piquet in Lotus 94T. Alain Prost followed before Riccardo Patrese, Bruno Giacomelli and Eddie Cheever.

As usual for several race weekends, no driver of a car was naturally aspirated in the top ten on the grid. Niki Lauda finished in 14th place as the best of these pilots.

Race

While Tambay took the lead before Arnoux, Piquet, Prost and Mansell, Elio de Angelis collided and Bruno Giacomelli. Further back in the field bounced Piercarlo Ghinzani in the Williams of Jacques Laffite FW08C and pushed that infringed the Arrows A6 by Marc Surer, collided consequently with Danny Sullivan. Not to be also involved in this accident, Corrado Fabi had to brake sharply. The immediately following John Watson could it not react in time and crashed into the rear of the Osella pilots. Three of the eight drivers involved in collisions dropped out immediately, Giacomelli had to give up shortly thereafter due to consequential damage.

While the Ferrari double guide still existed, Piquet and Prost behind dueled for third place. As the leadership duo in the 21st round aground on the to be lapped Jean -Pierre Jarier, Tambay was seriously impeded. Arnoux took the opportunity to take the lead. Also Piquet got past Tambay.

As the pit stops for refueling and tire changes were performed by the Brabham team faster than Ferrari, Piquet could sit down in the 28th round to the top. After Tambay was eliminated due to an oil leak and Piquet back retired on lap 38 due to an engine problem, Arnoux regained the lead from Prost, who caught up quickly. In the 48th round of this moved past his countryman and won.

Behind Arnoux took Piquet at the end of the third place ahead of Cheever, Mansell and Lauda.
