Background
When RAM Racing was a regular driver Jonathan Palmer, who participated in the same time held a 24- hour race at Le Mans, represented by Mike Thackwell. The Team Spirit Racing joined with the Dutch debutant Huub Rothengatter in place of Mauro Baldi.
Training
Although he had two weeks earlier suffered leg injuries in a collision with his team-mate Derek Warwick in the starting phase of the Grand Prix of Monaco, Patrick Tambay was reported for the Canada GP. However, he points during the first free practice found that caused him driving too much pain and thus waived participation in the further course of the weekend.
Nelson Piquet secured for the third time this season the pole position. There was Alain Prost before Elio de Angelis and Derek Warwick. The two Ferrari drivers René Arnoux and Michele Alboreto formed the third row in front of Nigel Mansell and Niki Lauda.
Race
The reigning world champion Nelson Piquet started from the pole in the lead and defended this position until the checkered flag. In addition, he was able to record the fastest lap of the race for themselves and thus achieved a Grand Slam this weekend. It was, however, at the same time to his first point result in the current season, making a successful title defense at this time was already questionable.
Prost continued until the 44th round of the second rank. Then he was overtaken by his teammate Lauda, who had fought his way up from eighth place out until the 14th round to third place forward. De Angelis crossed the finish line in fourth place ahead of Arnoux and Mansell.
