Background

During the two weeks that lay between the Grand Prix of the Netherlands and the third last World Cup race of the year at Monza, the FIA decided the team Tyrrell to delete all the income earned in the 1984 season and to participate in the remaining races of the year ban. The reason for this was the illegal use of additional water tanks that had served to increase the weight of the race car during the inspections artificially, what a massive Violation represented. Thus, the Italian Grand Prix in 1984, where only participated vehicles with turbo engines, the first race in Formula 1 history.

After it became known that Ayrton Senna had signed despite a still valid contract for the 1985 season with Team Lotus, he was suspended from his previous team Toleman. Stefan Johansson, who was looking for a new team due to the disqualification of Tyrrell, was hired as a replacement for the Brazilian. The Italian Pierluigi Martini debutant piloted a second Toleman TG184.

Gerhard Berger joined again as a guest starter for ATS.

Training

For the seventh time this season, the defending champion Nelson Piquet qualified for the pole position. Alain Prost reached the second place in front of Elio de Angelis and Niki Lauda. Teo Fabi and Keke Rosberg were the third row.

Race

Due to a gearbox failure during the warm-up lap Manfred Winkelhock was unable to start the race.

While Piquet and Prost could defend their starting positions, de Angelis fell behind the well started by the eighth of Patrick Tambay. They were followed by Fabi and Lauda, ​​who succeeded in the second round, also overtake de Angelis.

In the fourth round Prost was forced to retire due to an engine failure. Fabi turned in round seven of their achievement up to eighth place.

Until the 16th round nine of the 25 launched pilots were already eliminated, including the Piquet erstwhile leader. This Tambay took the lead before Fabi, who had fought his way to the front again. Behind the third-placed Michele Alboreto Lauda followed.

In the 44th round, there was again a change in leadership due to technical failure of the leader. This time Tambay was the person concerned. Since short time earlier, Fabi was excreted, henceforth Alboreto finished in second place behind the Lauda now leading. Third was already outsell Riccardo Patrese ahead of Stefan Johansson. Since both Eddie Cheever and Piercarlo Ghinzani had to give up due to lack of fuel a few laps before the end of the race, Jo Gartner and Gerhard Berger came on the fifth and sixth. Both, however, were not entitled to points then valid regulations as a guest.

For the first and so far only time in Grand Prix history (as of 2012) three Austrians were in the target in the top six.
