Background

Since the foreseeable future no longer two races per season were planned in the United States, was abandoned to the division in the U.S. East and U.S. West and described the race only as a United States Grand Prix or as Detroit Grand Prix.

As the representative for Patrick Tambay, who had to recover from foot injuries that he had sustained during the warm-up for the Canadian Grand Prix on the weekend before, Eddie Cheever was engaged, which thus was given the opportunity, his home Grand Prix deny.

Christian Danner's actually already provided for the Canada GP change from Osella for Arrows as successor to Marc Surer has now been completed. The gap left by Danner at Osella, was signed with the Canadian Formula 1 debutant Allen Berg.

Training

As already three times early in the season qualified Ayrton Senna for the pole position in front of the two Williams team-mate, with Nigel Mansell was this time before Nelson Piquet. René Arnoux reached the fourth place ahead of Ferrari driver Stefan Johansson and Jacques Laffite Ligier JS27 in the second Ligier.

Race

However, during the first lap Senna was able to defend its top position, she had to pass in the second round due to a switching error at Mansell. He was followed by Arnoux before Piquet and Johansson.

Due to brake problems Mansell was in the eighth round back behind Senna. Also Arnoux and Laffite moved past the British. They formed a Ligier double lead as Senna had to make an unscheduled pit stop due to a puncture in the twelfth round, which threw him back to eighth place. On lap 18, the lead changed between the two teammates at the top.

During the regular pit stops for tire changes, the Ligier mechanic proved over those of others battling for the win teams than slower. Since the Williams mechanic did not practice perfect stops, Senna came in the 39th round back in the lead before Piquet. He was followed by Alain Prost before the two Ligier pilots.

In the 42nd round Piquet crashed. Arnoux collided with his car and retired shortly afterwards after a collision with Thierry Boutsen also made. While Senna led by a wide margin, to cheers dueled with his compatriot Laffite for second place. By misfires disabled, the reigning world champion finally had to concede defeat scarce. Michele Alboreto was fourth ahead of Nigel Mansell and Riccardo Patrese.
