Background
As a replacement for Jacques Laffite, who had two weeks earlier suffered serious leg fractures as part of a launch accident at the Grand Prix of Great Britain, his compatriot Philippe Alliot was engaged.
With Arrows first came a copy of the new Arrows A9 used. The car was driven by Thierry Boutsen, while Christian Danner still took the A8.
Training
Shortly after Keke Rosberg had announced his retirement from Formula 1 to the end of the season, he qualified for the pole position ahead of his teammate Alain Prost. Ayrton Senna and Gerhard Berger made the second row before the two Williams drivers Nelson Piquet and Nigel Mansell.
Race
Senna went first before Berger lead. The two McLaren drivers dropped to the third and fifth. Stefan Johansson collided with Philippe Alliot, which had to pit both drivers to have repairs. Teo Fabi, who had also been involved in the accident, was eliminated.
In the second round Rosberg overtook both Berger and Senna and took over by the tip. Piquet got one lap later also at the two into second place. In the sixth round, he took the lead. Prost followed in third place ahead of Senna and Mansell. The latter had to contend with handling problems and was thus referred to in the seventh round of René Arnoux on the seventh rank.
Piquet left switch on the box twice his tires and had to surrender the lead by 27 each from both Round 15 and Round from multiple rounds at the two McLaren drivers, with Rosberg was the most time in front of Prost. From lap 39 Piquet led the race finally on.
In the final round, both McLaren drivers dropped out due to lack of fuel.
