Background

As a replacement for Jacques Laffite, who had two weeks earlier suffered serious leg fractures as part of a launch accident at the Grand Prix of Great Britain, his compatriot Philippe Alliot was engaged.

With Arrows first came a copy of the new Arrows A9 used. The car was driven by Thierry Boutsen, while Christian Danner still took the A8.

Training

Shortly after Keke Rosberg had announced his retirement from Formula 1 to the end of the season, he qualified for the pole position ahead of his teammate Alain Prost. Ayrton Senna and Gerhard Berger made ​​the second row before the two Williams drivers Nelson Piquet and Nigel Mansell.

Race
