Reports

Background

Compared to the Belgian Grand Prix two weeks earlier there were no changes in the field of participants.

After the number of starters was in previous years for safety on the narrow course mostly been limited, the organizers announced surprising that this year, all 26 drivers would be allowed to race.

Training

During exercise, a spectacular accident occurred in the slope between the Sainte Devote curve and the casino. As Michele Alboreto collided with the Zakspeed by Christian Danner, raised his Ferrari off, flew several feet through the air, landed back on the track and caught fire. The FISA saw Danner in the guilty and imprisoned him for the rest of the weekend. It was the first time in the history of Formula 1, that such a sentence was imposed. She was very controversial in the paddock, on the one hand, not all Christian Danner held guilty and it had other, previously given similar accidents in which no one had been punished.

With Nigel Mansell on pole and Ayrton Senna and Nelson Piquet, three equipped with Honda engines drivers qualified for the first three grid positions. Alain Prost followed in fourth place ahead of Michele Alboreto and Eddie Cheever.

Race

Mansell went to Senna, Piquet, Alboreto, Cheever and Prost in the lead. Until the 30th round changed to this order at the top of anything. Then, however, Mansell was forced to retire due to damage to the turbocharger. Senna took the lead and defended it from now through to the finish. Piquet was kept just as confidently in second place. Prost followed in third place, after he had previously located at this position Cheever overtaken on lap 51. As the Frenchman briefly retired three laps before the end of the race as well as Cheever before due to an engine failure, Michele Alboreto finished third before Gerhard Berger, Jonathan Palmer and Ivan Capelli.
