Background
With the new season an advertised prior to the start of pre-season ban on turbo engines came into force. In addition, with Pirelli returned a counterparty of Goodyear as a tire supplier to Formula 1 back. The British team Onyx approached as a new team. Some teams changed their engine partner. It both eight- and ten- and twelve-cylinder engines were used. In particular, manufacturers Ford -Cosworth and Judd have been chosen by many teams as a supplier. As new suppliers Yamaha and Lamborghini made their appearance.
In addition to the world champion team McLaren Arrows, Lotus, March, Minardi and Larrousse kept the rider line- with which they finished the 1988 season.
Nigel Mansell moved from Williams, where he was replaced by Thierry Boutsen to Ferrari. There he ousted Michele Alboreto, who took then at Tyrrell former place of Julian Bailey. Boutsens cockpit at Benetton was occupied with the newcomer Johnny Herbert. In addition to this start of the season the five other debutants Bertrand Gachot for Onyx, Gregor Foitek for EuroBrun, Olivier Grouillard for Ligier, Volker Weidler were reported for Rial and Joachim Winkelhock for AGS.
This has now been sold to Bernie Ecclestone Brabham team returned after a year break with drivers Martin Brundle and Stefano Modena back to the participants. Up to EuroBrun and AGS all teams competed with two cars.
Numerous teams started with more advanced prior-year vehicles in the season.
Training

Race
On very hot race day could Patrese and Berger, whose Ferrari was the first time equipped with a semi-automatic transmission, up to the first corner Senna, who had started badly, unlock. Berger and Senna collided, after Patrese took the lead. Meanwhile, teammate Boutsen followed in second place ahead of Mansell, Prost, Capelli and Warwick.
Mansell pulled over in the third round at Boutsen, who retired shortly thereafter. On lap 15, the Briton took over after a strong maneuvers against Patrese the lead. He won ahead of Alain Prost and Maurício Gugelmin. For the Brazilians, this was the only podium finish of his Formula 1 career. Fourth was the impressive newcomer Johnny Herbert before Derek Warwick and Alessandro Nannini.
The Ferrari victory was a surprise for the team itself, which had to contend during test drives in advance of the season with a lack of reliability. Ferrari's race director had even suggested to start with half full tank into the race to appear due to the lower weight compared to competitors compete at least until the expected loss Mansell.
