Background

In terms of the field there was no change compared to the U.S. Grand Prix two weeks earlier.

Training

For the first time this season, did not qualify Ayrton Senna, but his team-mate Alain Prost for the pole position. Senna followed on the second place in front of Riccardo Patrese and Gerhard Berger. Behind their two team-mates Nigel Mansell and Thierry Boutsen represented the third row in front of Stefano Modena and Alex Caffi.

Race

Due to rain in the morning the track was not yet dried at the time of the launch altogether. However, Nigel Mansell, Alessandro Nannini and Luis Pérez- Sala decided at the end of the formation lap to drive the box to allow mount slicks. Mansell and Nannini assumed to lie at the end of the field, as it accelerated after successful tire change from the pit lane. In reality, they were at the top of the field, as the start was slightly delayed, which the two had not noticed in the pit lane. Using the black flag they were disqualified. Pérez- Sala, whose tire change had taken longer lined up properly at the end of the field and was therefore not punished.

Prost led the race after the disqualification of Mansell and Nannini at before Senna, Patrese, Berger and Boutsen. At the end of the first lap Prost and Caffi changed to dry tires. The Frenchman retired shortly thereafter because of a suspension damage. As a pit stop from Senna was Patrese from the fourth round ahead of his teammate Boutsen at the top. Stefan Johansson went to his tire change going on too early and dragged an impact wrench and parts of the air hose behind him. He was disqualified immediately.

Boutsen was one of the last who switched to slicks. Shortly thereafter, there was a renewed rain. The Leading Patrese, who was still equipped with rain tires, was able to pull out a massive advantage in that his opponents had to slicks back to the pits in a relatively slow speed to be carried out another change to rain tires. Derek Warwick and Nicola Larini also benefited from and thus arrived at the second and third places.

Senna got up quickly. In the 30th round he pushed Larini, who retired shortly thereafter due to an electrical defect, the third rank. As Patrese on lap 35, the boxing was heading to let mount new rain tires, Warwick took the lead ahead of Senna. A little later he left due to an engine failure.

Seven laps from the end of the race, overtook his team-mate Patrese and Boutsen was characterized in second place behind Senna. When he had to retire due to an engine failure, there is a double win for the team Williams revealed. It was the first Grand Prix victory for Thierry Boutsen. Andrea de Cesaris took third place ahead of Nelson Piquet, René Arnoux and Alex Caffi.
