Background

The weekend after the Grand Prix of Portugal, the Spain -GP was first held at the Circuit de Catalunya opened a few days earlier. For this change of location had been chosen partly because of the serious accident of Martin Donnelly in the previous year at the Circuito Permanente de Jerez.
