Background

The same participants who had previously contested the Grand Prix of Japan two weeks, also graduated from the season finale in Australia.

Training

Nigel Mansell qualified for the pole position in front of Ayrton Senna. In the second row followed their respective teammates Riccardo Patrese and Gerhard Berger ahead of Michael Schumacher, Jean Alesi, Andrea de Cesaris and Martin Brundle.

Race

While Mansell took the lead before Senna collided further back in Pierluigi Martini field, Olivier and Michele Alboreto Grouillard. Maurício Gugelmin, which was also slightly involved in the accident, the first race was able to continue. He had an accident but a few laps later due to brake failure, since a brake line had been damaged in the course of the collision.

On lap 19 Mansell slowed abruptly. Senna, who therefore did not expect and did not react fast enough, bounced into the back of his opponent and imputed intention this later after both had been eliminated.
