Top 16

The regular season of the top 16 ever had a back-and second round, where the teams were divided into two rating groups. In each case, the top four qualified for the playoffs, consisting of two groups of four. In each case, the two best in the playoff groups reached the semi-finals. In the final game, which took place on 8 June 2002 at the Stade de France, the semi-final winners play for the championship trophy Bouclier the Brennus. This Biarritz Olympique won against the SU Agen and won for the third time the championship.

At the same time the playoffs was a relegation round instead of the four worst teams in the regular season. After a pre -trip round the two last ones Atlantique Stade Rochelais and U.S. Dax rose from.
