2008 Italian Grand Prix

The Grand Prix of Italy 2008 ( official Formula 1 Gran Premio d' Italia 2008) took place on 14 September at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza in Monza and was the four Zente race of the Formula 1 2008 season.

Background

After the Belgian Grand Prix Lewis Hamilton led the drivers' standings with two points ahead of Felipe Massa and 18 points ahead of Robert Kubica on. Ferrari resulted in the constructors' championship with twelve points ahead of McLaren -Mercedes and 24 points ahead of BMW Sauber.

With Rubens Barrichello (twice), David Coulthard and Fernando Alonso ( once each ) were three former winners of this Grand Prix.

Training

In the first free practice Adrian Sutil set the fastest time followed by Barrichello and Giancarlo Fisichella. The second free practice session concluded from Kimi Raikkonen was fastest. He was followed by Kubica and Nick Heidfeld. In the third free practice three German drove the fastest times. Timo Glock secured the fastest time in front of Sebastian Vettel and Nico Rosberg.

Qualification

In the first qualifying section Heikki Kovalainen drove the fastest lap time. The two Honda riders, and Piquet Jr., Nakajima and Sutil dropped out. In the second segment, Sebastian Vettel took the lead. Hamilton, Raikkonen, Coulthard, Fisichella and Kubica retired from. In the final section Vettel set the fastest time again and secured the first pole position of his Formula 1 career. Behind Vettel and Webber Kovalainen is placed. At the age of 21 years and 72 days he became the youngest rider to go, who scored a pole position.

Race

Vettel won the race ahead of Kovalainen and Kubica and was aged 21 years and 73 days, the youngest Grand Prix winner until then.

The remaining points positions occupied before Heidfeld Alonso, Massa, Hamilton and Webber.
