2011–12 Costa Rican Primera División season

The 2011/12 season included the 97th and the 98th edition of the Primera División de Costa Rica, the Costa Rican highest football league. Invierno 2011 and Verano PROGOL - JPS JPS PROGOL - 2012 - - This season two championships were played. From the results of both championships a total table was created to identify the participants in the relegation with the runner-up of the Liga de Ascenso - Segunda Division. The winners of both championships qualified for the CONCACAF Champions League 2012/13. Alajuelense won the Invierno 2011, the third championship in a row and the 27th in club history to Herediano secured in the Verano 2012 for the 22nd time in club history the championship. Newcomer Orión lost the relegation against the runner-up of the second division, an increase after only one year from the second division.

Competition mode

On April 12, 2011, agreed representatives of the eleven member clubs of UNAFUT to reform the game mode the national championship, which entails, among other things, the elimination of the two-group system with it. On May 10, 2011, the game mode was again slightly altered. The 2011/12 season is divided into two seasons, Invierno 2011 and Verano, 2012. The two championships were played in the following mode:

After the 2010/11 used from CD Barrio México franchise of Liberia Mía CF during the Verano 2011 was excluded from the UNAFUT, remained only eleven clubs for season 2011 /12.

Due to its difficult financial situation and the non- acceptance by the fans Brujas FC disbanded following the Verano 2011. The owners of the franchise gave these from for the next five years to Juan Luis Hernández and the club Orión FC. Orión went by the name Orión FC - Desamparados at the start.

* Orión FC - Desamparados originally played at the Estadio Hernán " Cuty " Monge in Desamparados, San Jose.
