Western Mediterranean

  • Spring - In the First Punic War, the Roman fleet under Marcus Atilius Regulus and Lucius Manlius Vulso Longus succeed in the Battle of Cape Ecnomus off the southern coast of Sicily ( at each over 300 ships participate on both sides) a victory over the Carthaginians under Hamilcar Barca and Hanno. This clears the way for the landing of Roman troops in Africa.
  • Marcus Atilius Regulus lands with a force in North Africa and begins with the Siege of Aspis. After a few weeks, the Romans conquered the city and make it the starting point for further operations.
  • The Carthaginians appointed their general Hamilcar back from Sicily. While much of the Roman fleet under Lucius Manlius returned to Rome Vulso Longus, the landing army remains under Marcus Atilius Regulus in Africa and devastates the local area.
  • In the battle of Ady the Romans succeed in a victory on African soil for the first time. Then march the Romans to Carthage, where they take their winter quarters at Tunis.
  • The Carthaginians ask the Romans for peace. However, their commander Marcus Atilius Regulus asks such hard conditions ( withdrawal from Sardinia and Sicily, paying tribute ), that the Carthaginians continue the fight.

  • In China, the Zhou Dynasty is destroyed by the occupation of the capital Luoyang by the army of the State of Qin.
